Lots of people have made different resolutions for 2020, but how about keeping it simple and resolving to be kind?
Showing kindness is a conscious choice that we can make in every interaction that we have. Kindness can be practiced and it is something that everyone can do. Feelings of love are generally automatic and can’t be forced, but kindness is something that we can actively cultivate.
I’m sure many of you think that you are already kind: you let someone pass in front of you earlier, you stopped to chat with your neighbour who lives alone, you donate to charity, you helped your child with their homework; all of these are great, but that doesn’t mean that your kindness quota is full. How else can you be kind?
Small acts of kindnesses towards others will make their day better, and will leave you feeling happier too. It sounds like a win-win situation to me. Real kindness is authentic, not simply another task on your to-do-list.
Remember to be kind to yourself too and show self-compassion. Congratulate yourself on positive steps that you make, no matter how small they seem. Concentrate on what you have achieved, not what you haven’t. Being kind to others is wonderful, but showing yourself kindness is just as important. Feeling better about yourself will allow you to be better to others too.
In every interaction we have with others, we have a choice how we behave. No matter how difficult the situation, being kind is always an option.
How do you fancy instilling some kindness into the year ahead?
