I’ve just returned from holiday where no Wi-Fi and patchy mobile coverage have meant that I have had an enforced digital detox, which made me laugh as I had started to write a post about the benefits of a digital detox before I went!
Here is what I learnt:
Slowing down is a good thing
It’s certainly easier on holiday, but how can you take the pressure of day to day? Do you really need to respond to that message immediately? Technology is brilliant as it allows us instant access to other people and information, but remind yourself that some things can wait.
I had more time
Even on holiday, not using a phone gave me more time to relax and just be with my family, enjoy our surroundings and take things moment by moment.
It was liberating
Not being able to use my phone as I might have wanted was lovely! It was a chance to step back and review how I use technology and decide how I want to change my behaviour going forward.
How can you benefit?
If you feel that your use of technology distracts you from being with others or what you should be doing, it is having a negative impact on your life. Decide what a digital detox looks like for you to give you back control.
Be realistic and start small
Make rules that you can stick to such as no phones at the table, only checking emails once an hour or once per day. Going cold turkey may be too extreme and impractical.
Make a family plan – or rope in a friend
Make your own digital manifesto for what is and isn’t acceptable in your household or friendship group. People are far more likely to stick to new habits if they feel supported.
Model good behaviour
There is no point in berating your partner, friend or children for their use of digital media if your face is permanently glued to a screen. Yes, a certain amount of screen time is inevitable for most of us, but ask yourself if you really need to do that task now. Could it wait for a better moment? Model good behaviour to those around you.
Keep technology out of the bedroom
You will sleep better and feel better if you don’t use technology before bed. For more info see my post www.essentialfocuscoaching.com/blog/10-tips-to-get-a-good-nights-sleep
