Since childhood we have had it ingrained into us that September is back to school time, the beginning of a new year. This mentality continues into adulthood, particularly if you have school-aged children of your own. It feels like a fresh start to me – much more than January does.
Don’t worry about the September blues: think new season, new start.
Yes, I know, this year has been different to other years, but the schools will be going back over the next couple of weeks and it’s certainly starting to feel more autumnal. If you have been lucky enough to go on holiday or to have time off or over the summer, returning to the everyday routine will give you a new perspective on life: what’s working and what’s not so much. I know that I have come back from a week in Wales with a serious decluttering bug, and my house doesn’t know what’s hit it!
How can you harness this fresh perspective? Start by asking yourself what would you like to change. Where would you like to be in 3, 6 or 12 months? What do you need to do to get there? Making a realistic, achievable plan, broken down into easy steps is the key to moving forward.
However, saying you are going to do something is far easier than actually doing it. It can be hard sticking to resolutions on your own, so enlist the help of others or maybe now could be a good time to consider coaching. Working with a coach will make you reach your goals more quickly and mean you are more likely to get there than working alone.
Regular coaching sessions will make you accountable and get you closer to achieving your goals: keeping you on track, understanding any obstacles getting in the way and re-evaluating your goals as you go – to make sure they really are what you want.
So, for those of you looking to make changes to your life, September is the perfect time. There is far less pressure on keeping resolutions than in January. And you’ve given yourself a head-start: you’ll already be three months into achieving your goals and creating new positive habits by the time January 1st comes around. Sound good?
This September have a seasonal MOT of where you are and where you would like to be. Stop feeling like life is happening to you and get back in the driving seat.
